Gua Sha therapy is a skin scraping technique. Gua means scraping, and Sha refers to papules, which are the many small, solid elevations of the skin. It can loosen the pores to get rid of pathogens, and to stimulate the internal tissue and organs to increase resistance and self-healing.
The area to be treated is first lubricated with oil, and then scraped with scrapers until the red papules become fully visible and coalesce. Lubricants can include water, alcohol, flower oils and vegetable oils such as sesame oil. The tools are nature materials with smooth edges, such as chinaware, silver table spoons, coins, bamboo plates, buffalo horns, and jade products.
The body, the Qi field, is highly organized and extremely complicated. Qi flows smoothly through a channel network within the body. The channel network is similar to a tree, it is made up of a big, deep part like the trunk of a tree, small, sallow parts like branches and twigs, and superficial parts like leaves. On the surface of the body, there are twelve cutaneous regions. They overlay the broad network of superficial channels and link them together. Invasion of exogenous pathogenic factors through the skin can penetrate the deep layers of the channels system. Cutaneous regions also manifest disorders of the deep-lying channels. Gua Sha, like many other treatment methods such as medicinal ointments, massage, cupping, plum blossom needling, and dermal needling, is able to have a deep therapeutic effect.
