Moxibustion  艾灸

Picture
Moxibustion applies heat to the body by burning moxa. Moxa is made from the prepared leaves of mugwort (Ai Ye, Artemisia argyi) in the form of a cone or stick. There are direct method in which burning moxa is placed on the skin and indirect method in which burning moxa does not contact the skin.

Moxibustion is often used together with acupuncture and herbs. Putting burning moxa on needles which are inserted into points is called “warming needling.” Combination of fine herbal powders and moxa wool is an herbal moxa poll. To put herbs on acupuncture points and then burn moxa on the herbs is another typical indirect method. The commonly-used herbs include garlic, ginger, salt, fermented bean cakes, aconite cakes, and pepper cakes.

Moxibustion is useful and effective. It can warm up yang, dispel cold, eliminate dampness, reopen the meridians, invigorate Qi and blood, and harmonize functional states of different organs. “When a disease fails to respond to medication and acupuncture, moxibustion is suggested.” Moxibustion has a wide range of indications, and is especially useful for cold patterns, deficiency conditions, and the elderly.
